Painting Wood Doors

staining and clear coat finish Purchase a high quality oil-based primer. A water based primer is the wrong choice for wood doors. Along with the primer you will need to purchase a high quality oil-based top coat finish. Both the finish and primer will be used in conjunction with each other and it is best to stick with the same brand.

Two coats need to be applied, sanding lightly in between coats using fine sandpaper grit. Remember to remove any foreign particles before applying the second coat.

Doors that are exposed to a great amount of direct sunlight, such as those facing the south or west, should be painted a lighter color to avoid excessive movement, splitting or cracking and you may need to refinish the door more frequently.
